Our mission
The Healing Lead is a Forward-Minded Leadership Program that utilizes professionally rehabilitated and specially trained Companion Dogs to help children overcome the effects of severe childhood trauma through the practical application of leadership principles. We believe that leadership is not a position - it is a way of thinking, making decisions, and accepting responsibility. It begins by learning to lead ourselves before we can successfully lead others. Our Companion Dogs are not therapists. They are leadership partners. They provide immediate, honest feedback that cannot be manipulated or negotiated. The dog responds to consistency, confidence, clear communication, emotional stability, fairness, and trust. If those qualities are absent, the team struggles. If they are present, the team succeeds. To develop these qualities, The Healing Lead utilizes Working Agility to create controlled challenges within an environment of structured adversity. Children are encouraged to face increasingly difficult obstacles while maintaining leadership, composure, and responsibility for another living being. Obedience provides the structure that channels these challenges into success. Rather than reacting emotionally when obstacles arise, children learn to think, adapt, communicate clearly, and continue moving forward. Every obstacle successfully completed reinforces a simple but life-changing truth: "I can overcome difficult things." That confidence is earned through action—not simply encouragement. As children learn to lead their Companion Dog through progressively greater challenges, they also develop leadership over themselves. They discover self-discipline, accountability, patience, resilience, emotional regulation, integrity, perseverance, and service to others. These are not merely dog handling skills. They are leadership principles. The same principles required to build a successful relationship with a Companion Dog are the same principles required to build successful families, businesses, communities, military units, emergency response teams, athletic teams, classrooms, and workplaces. A good leader creates a good team. Whether that team consists of a child and a dog, a parent and a family, a teacher and a classroom, or a business owner and employees, the principles remain the same. Leadership built upon responsibility, trust, consistency, communication, and service produces stronger relationships and better outcomes. The Healing Lead uses the unique partnership between a child and a Companion Dog because it allows these leadership principles to be experienced—not simply taught. The dog becomes the mirror. The obstacle becomes the lesson. Leadership becomes the path. Healing becomes the result. Handling becomes Leadership. Leadership builds Self-Agency. Self-Agency restores Hope. Hope creates Healing.
The program
01
We rescue and save shelter dogs from high-kill facilities across Arizona as well as qualified and selected candidates from donation.Every Dog Is Carefully Evaluated. Not every good dog is the right dog for this program. Every dog completes a comprehensive temperament evaluation before being considered. We look for emotionally stable, confident, healthy dogs with an eagerness to connect with people and the personality to thrive as a child's daily companion. Our dogs must demonstrate sound judgment, resilience, trainability, and a calm, dependable nature. We don't just look for obedience—we look for character. Only dogs that meet our standards move forward into training, because every child deserves a companion they can trust.

Each dog undergoes months of specialized training to become a reliable Companion Dog, patient, gentle, and specifically attuned to their child handler's needs.Upon completion of The Healing Leads training program the child is carefully matched with a trained Companion Dog.Each Companion Dog is trained to remain calm, confident, and reliable in a wide variety of environments and real-world situations. The Healing Lead dogs are exposed to different sights, sounds, people, animals, and everyday distractions to ensure they can handle the challenges of daily life.Throughout training, every dog must demonstrate a stable temperament, remain safe and neutral around people and other animals, and show no signs of aggression. Our goal isn't simply an obedient dog—it's a trustworthy companion that a child and family can depend on every day.

The Journey Begins...Referred children are carefully matched with their Companion Dog. Together, they begin a journey of trust, responsibility, and hope.A selectively matched dog is only the beginning. The real transformation happens through the relationship they build together. The child learns to feed, groom, train, and care for their dog through consistent, structured daily routines. As the dog becomes part of the family, the child develops responsibility, confidence, healthy boundaries, and self-agency.Day by day, the bond grows stronger. That relationship becomes a source of strength, encouragement, and hope, helping the child move beyond the effects of abuse and face life with greater confidence. The Healing Lead isn't simply about giving a child a dog. It's about building a lifelong partnership that helps both the child and the dog move forward together.

The Healing Lead is being built to do more than match children with companion dogs. We're building a program that teaches children to become confident canine handlers. Through structured, hands-on training, children learn how to communicate with, care for, and lead their dogs with consistency and purpose. They develop practical skills in handling, obedience, grooming, feeding, health awareness, and responsible ownership. As their handling skills grow, so do their confidence, self-discipline, emotional regulation, and sense of personal responsibility. The dog is not simply a companion—it is a daily partner that helps the child develop the character and life skills needed to move forward with strength and hope.
