Dog trainer working with a dog outdoors

Our program

Building Dogs. Building Handlers. Building Stronger Futures.A trained Companion Dog becomes more than a friend. Through daily responsibility, structured training, and an unbreakable partnership, children rebuild confidence, discover their own strength, and develop the character needed to succeed in life.

At The Healing Lead, our goal is not simply to train dogs. Our goal is to develop responsible young people. As a child learns to become a capable canine handler, they also learn the qualities that make successful adults: responsibility, discipline, consistency, patience, accountability, leadership, and service to others. Those same principles carry into every area of life. They help shape dependable sons and daughters, trustworthy friends, reliable employees, responsible spouses, loving parents, and productive members of their communities. Our program follows a structured, step-by-step framework inspired by biblical principles. Like many successful organizations—including the military, skilled trades, and emergency services—we believe character is built through daily habits, personal responsibility, and consistent practice. The difference is our focus. We are not preparing children for combat. We are preparing them for life.Progress isn't measured by fame, status, or unrealistic dreams. It is measured by showing up every day, caring for another living being, keeping your word, overcoming challenges, and continuing to move forward with integrity when life becomes difficult.Every lesson with a Companion Dog is ultimately a lesson in becoming the kind of person others can trust. That is the true mission of The Healing Lead.

The process

It starts with a rescue. It ends with recovery.

The Healing Lead runs a structured, four-phase program that transforms shelter dogs into trained companion animals — and pairs them with children who have experienced abuse or trauma. The program takes 6 to 12 months from rescue to placement, and continues with ongoing support for every family we serve.

Phase 1
Weeks 1–4

Rescue & assessment

We pull dogs from high-kill shelters across Arizona — selecting animals with the temperament, resilience, and capacity for connection that our program demands. Every dog undergoes a thorough behavioral and health assessment before training begins.

  • Sourced from Maricopa County shelters and partner rescues
  • Full veterinary evaluation and vaccinations
  • Behavioral temperament testing by certified trainers
  • Placement into foster care or our training facility

Phase 2

Specialized training

Some children have never known what it feels like to be safe, trusted, or truly believed. We're changing that—decisively.By pairing carefully selected Companion Dogs with children who have survived abuse, we don’t just offer comfort—we rebuild what was broken. We create a path toward responsibility, confidence, and hope—one step, one lesson, one day at a time.Help us give a child more than a dog. Help us give them a reason to believe in tomorrow. Each dog undergoes months of intensive training and socialization. Our certified trainers use modern, proven methods grounded in old-world Handler philosophy to cultivate the patience, attunement, and calm presence this work demands. No shortcuts. No compromises. No timelines rushed.

  • Positive reinforcement training — no aversive methods
  • Desensitization to unpredictable child behavior
  • Certification through a recognized positive-reinforcement training program
  • Weekly progress evaluations by lead trainer
Phase 3

  • Bi-weekly structured sessions with program staff
  • Coordination with the child's existing therapy team
  • Family education and support resources
  • Ongoing veterinary care covered by The Healing Lead
